The Bucs lost a key game, but not all is lost when it comes to the team’s playoff aspirations.

Tampa Bay caught some breaks today, with other NFC wildcard contenders losing as well, including the Vikings, Seahawks and Saints.

The Bucs began the day in a tie for what would be the second wildcard spot in the conference, and the Sunday’s results kept things status quo. The Bucs are 6-5, joined by Seahawks and Vikings, who lost to the Dolphins and Bears, respectively. Like today, each team in the trio faces tough games next week, too. The Bucs visit the Broncos, while the Seahawks are at the Bears and the Vikings are at the Packers.

If the playoffs started today, the Seahawks would get the nod over the Bucs because of their better NFC record. Seattle also would knock out the Vikings based on the result of their head-to-head matchup. The Bucs hold the tiebreaker over the Vikings by virtue of their head-to-head victory in October.

With a difficult stretch run ahead, the Bucs see playoff talk as a distraction and won’t engage in it.

“At this point we’re looking strictly at the next game,” QB Josh Freeman said. “It’s a one-game season. That’s stuff that’ll take care of itself.”
