Injuries are like little assassins that hide behind every door for NFL players, whose contracts are not guaranteed.

If Donald Penn needed a reminder of that, he got it this summer when LSU rookie safety Chad Jones severely injured his left leg in a terrifying car crash June 25 in New Orleans.

Raheem Morris gives Barrett Ruud some perspective

Donald Penn wasn't the only restricted free agent who thought he'd been treated unfairly by the Buccaneers.

Linebacker Barrett Ruud has, for more than a year, been seeking a long-term contract extension, only to be rebuffed again. He did not hold out, as Penn did, but Ruud certainly would be among those who would have a reaction to Penn's extension.

Freeman, Bucs players happy to see LT Donald Penn return

Count quarterback Josh Freeman among the most relieved players to see left tackle Donald Penn join practice Saturday morning.

"I think I'll sleep a lot better,'' Freeman said after Penn signed a 6-year, $48-million contract that included nearly $20-million guaranteed.
