Former Florida State receiver Preston Parker, who played last season at Division II North Alabama and was not selected in this weekend's NFL draft, said Saturday that he's signed a free-agent contract with the Bucs.
"I thought that was the best option -- closer, and it's a good team that needs a little help," said Parker, who said he also had offers from the Texans, Chiefs and Redskins.
Parker, 5-foot-11 and 197 pounds, had 62 catches for 791 yards and three touchdowns as a sophomore at FSU in 2007, but was dismissed from the Seminoles early last year after being arrested for driving under the influence. Times writer Brian Landman detailed his off-field problems and his attempts to get back on the right path in football in this story in February.
The Bucs drafted two receivers in Illinois' Arrelious Benn and Syracuse's Mike Williams, but it remains a position of need, and Parker will have a chance to show what he can do this summer.
