Bucs Minicamp: Wednesday

By most accounts, Jeff Garcia did not have a good practice. He was off target quite a bit and was obviously frustrated with himself. It's times like this that you may regret implying that if you don't get a new deal that you may not be as mentally sharp as you should be.

Luke McCown continues to outperform Brian Griese by just about every measurable standard.

Josh Johnson did not get any reps Wednesday.

Everyone is talking about B.J. Askew being more involved in the passing game this season than last. I thought he was pretty involved last year for a fullback. He caught 18 passes and seemed to break at least one tackle every time he touched the ball. Warrick Dunn has also been promised a lot of catches and now the Bucs have three pass-catching tight ends. I don't know how many balls Askew can reasonably expect. In any case, he was catching balls Wednesday and looking good doing it.

Speaking of pass-catching tight ends, Griese seems to be developing a nice chemistry with Jerramy Stevens. He was obviously Griese's favorite target for the day.

Gaines Adams looks faster than any other defensive lineman right now.

Kevin Carter is also having a good minicamp. His instincts are incredible. Carter looks like he'll be the main competition for Greg White. Or maybe it's the other way around. If they were to have to play a game tomorrow, I'd expect that Carter would start at left defensive end.

Dre Moore is looking better than he did in the rookie minicamp, but Jovan Haye is just tearing it up. It's going to hard for anyone to perform well enough to knock Haye out of the starting under tackle spot.

Cato June has a nice interception on Griese. Griese's attempt was to Warrick Dunn, but June broke on the ball before Dunn ever got turned around.

Jermaine Phillips looks like he's picking up where he left of last year. He's having a great offseason and may be putting together a resume for 2009 since this is the last year of his contract. If Phillips plays like he did last year, he's going to get paid and it may be by the Bucs. But the team also has a second round pick invested in Sabby Piscitelli, who is also boucing back nicely from last year's injury. If Phillips continues to perform like this, he'll be the starter this season again and it will be very interesting to see how he performs on the field in a contract year with Piscitelli breathing down his neck.

The Bucs canceled Thursday's practice, so this is the last of the Bucs we'll see on the field until training camp.

I was going to make some stupid, lame joke about dudes holding hands and Hovan slapping a dude in the face. But are you looking at Patrick Chukwurah's arms? Holy fuck, he'd squeeze me like an orange. Screw that. These are two totally straight football players working on their hand placement in a completely non-gay way. Later tonight, they will go home, eat steak, fuck their wives and watch hockey, maybe all at the same time. That is all.
