John Lynch Thinks Mentoring Is Overrated

John Lynch is going to have to compete for a starting spot on the Broncos' roster this season. And if he doesn't get it, he won't know what to do with himself.

So what happens if he loses his safety spot? Lynch isn't going there in his mind, but he doesn't sound like a man who would stay as a backup.

"It would be really hard," he said. "To be honest with you, I don't know how much I'd be worth to a roster in today's world. I've always thought this 'Well, he's a great mentor to the younger players' stuff is overrated. I take that responsibility seriously because there were guys who mentored me. But if you're not playing and you're not productive, that's a bunch of hogwash."

Just the fact that Lynch uses the word "hogwash" in a real sentence tells me he's probably too old to be playing anymore. But if he doesn't get to start at safety this year, he could always go to his fallback position.

The worst combination is if he would have to mentor a new kicker.
