B.J. Askew has signed a contract extension with the Buccaneers. Depending on who you ask, the deal is either for four or five years and is worth either $7.6 million or $8.6 million. From <a href="

Askew, who was entering the final season of a two-year contract he signed last spring, was rewarded with a five-year deal that will pay him $7.6 million through 2012. The deal makes Askew one of the highest-paid fullbacks in the NFL. He received a $1 million signing bonus and a $1 million roster bonus and is set to receive $605,000 in base salary in 2008.

And from the Times:

...the Bucs have locked up fullback B.J. Askew by signing him to a 4-year contract extension today. His agent, Scott Smith of XAM Sports, just confirmed the news to us. Askew is believed to have signed a package that includes a total of $8.6-million, including a signing bonus of $2-million.

Maybe there's some kind of weird football math that makes both of those statements mean the same thing. Either way, Askew got a big chunk of cash yesterday and will be with the team for at least the next couple years. I'm sure Askew himself will have a comment on the extension in the near future. It's a great move for the Bucs. Askew is a terrific run-blocker and always seems to make tacklers miss when he's catching the ball out of the backfield.

Now, who here thinks it's a total coincidence that the guy who showed up to all the OTAs so far and hasn't said a word about the contract extension that he was promised back in January was the first one to get extended? Someone tell Jeff Garcia to shut the hell up, do his job and good things will happen. Some people say the squeaky wheel gets the grease. But when you have as much money as the Bucs do, the squeaky wheel just gets fucking replaced with a newer, less metrosexual wheel.

Askew is thankful that the league did away with the spiked pylon.
