Stevens Resigns…Bucs Cut Grads

Published: May 30th, 2008
By Buccaneer Harbour
The Bucs resigned Stevens to another league minimum one year deal, probably as an insurance policy for if Troupe doesn't pan out. His signing prompted the Bucs to cut a player...QB Bruce Gradkowski.

Well, we knew this one was coming. I mean...really...his play just wasn't effective. In this league you have to have an arm strong enough to threaten the field 30-40 yards down field. Yes, it's even better if you can threaten 60+ yards, but the middle deep routes are crucial to getting defense to keep from stacking the box and coming hard on passes while stuffing runs. Bruce couldn't hit those passes. He wasn't accurate beyond 20 yards, and that allowed defenses to risk a couple of extra defenders in the box. The result was the horrid lack of offense in 2006 and again in the Washington game last year. We had 7 turnovers, didn't cough it up once, and still barely won the game. Quite frankly, while it would of been nice if he could have worked out here, and he seems like a good guy, I'm glad he's no longer a threat to stifle our offense. He had the opportunity to make something of himself here and blew it. McCown and Griese will battle it out for the back-up spot while Johnson learns and Simms does something...err...anything, until he gets traded, whacked, or, by some miracle, beats somebody out of a position. The fact he hasn't been in the OTA's seems to show he's likely a goner as well.

The Buccaneers CUT a QB!!! See Ya Later Bruce Gradkowski!

Published: May 30th, 2008
By Buc 'Em

Today the Bucs released QB Bruce Gradkowski. Better to do it now to give the kid a chance to catch on somewhere else. This leaves us with only 24 QB's left on the roster.

JScott:
I love the 24 QB's comment, hilarious. I don't know about you guys, but I'm shocked by this move. Not that it shouldn't have happened, but that it happened so soon. I think its great. Obviously it sucks for Bruce, but its the thing to do and like my man above said, it gives him time to find another team if there is such a thing. I can't believe Chucky let one go... now let's hope he doesnt miss the congestion and add another QB...

Well, That Was Fast

The Buccaneers released Bruce Gradkowski and used the roster spot to re-sign Jerramy Stevens. I like to think the Bucs check this blog constantly and saw my entry about Gradkowski's inevitable release and decided that there was no time like the present. So that's what I'll go with.

Bruce was lovable, but this is what’s best

Published: May 30th, 2008

Bruce Gradkowski is an easy guy to like. He's affable and charming, the kind of guy who gets along with everyone -- even us beat writers.

As a result, the human in you hates to see a guy like that get dumped. But let's face the undeniable fact here: this was inevitable. Ironically, it might also be the best thing that could have happened to him.

QB Cutting Starts w/ Release of Gradkowski

Gradkowski

The Buccaneers have begun the process of streamlining their QB spot, as today they cut Bruce Gradkowski, the former 6th-round pick from Toledo.  Gradkowski was one of many QB’s on the roster, and this could clear the way for one of the others to make it on the team.  Last season he played in four games, throwing for 130 yards, no TD’s and one pick.

Bucs sign Stevens, release Gradkowski

Published: May 30th, 2008
By Bucs Beat | tampabay.com - St. Petersburg Times and tbt*

The Bucs, looking for players capable of providing an offensive spark, have re-signed tight end Jerramy Stevens and parted ways with quarterback Bruce Gradkowski.

The move to re-sign Stevens was not a complete surprise, but the release of Gradkowski is the team's first effort to whittle down its stable of quarterbacks, which now stands at six including the retired Jake Plummer, whose rights the team still own.

John Lynch Thinks Mentoring Is Overrated

Published: May 30th, 2008
By Bucstats.com weblog

John Lynch is going to have to compete for a starting spot on the Broncos' roster this season. And if he doesn't get it, he won't know what to do with himself.

So what happens if he loses his safety spot? Lynch isn't going there in his mind, but he doesn't sound like a man who would stay as a backup.

Quarterback Competition Isn’t Really

Published: May 30th, 2008

This Tribune article sets up Bruce Gradkowski and Luke McCown as competitors for the same backup position, and that's very nice of them. But unless McCown goes nuts with a chainsaw in a mall sometime in the next couple months, he's got this thing locked up. The real competition will be between McCown and Brian Griese for the backup spot.

Heads up on today’s Gaines Adams piece

Published: May 29th, 2008
By Bucs Beat | tampabay.com - St. Petersburg Times and tbt*

I assume there are some readers of the blog who are not necessarily readers of the newspaper, so I wanted to point out today's Gaines Adams feature that I made reference to on Wednesday.

Adams In a nutshell, it's about how Adams has overhauled his diet to get in better physical shape while really hitting the weight room hard. Before now, he admits he had a consistent diet of junk food from McDonald's and other fast-food joints. You can already see a major difference in his physique, so the changes have had an impact.

The Worst Thing You Will See Today

I don't normally bore you with Volunteer news, but you had to see this.

I had read about Tennessee fullback David Holbert's injury when it happened back in March, but, you know, guys get hurt all the time and I didn't think it was anything special. Then today, I saw this picture of the injury.
