18 Months = Not Enough Time Off For Simms

Published: March 27th, 2008
By Bucstats.com weblog

Chris Simms has spent the last 19 months of his life throwing seven interceptions in his last three games, rupturing his spleen and then taking the next 18 months off. During this time, the Buccaneers brought Jeff Garcia in from free agency and traded for Jake Plummer and Brian Griese, all while paying Simms $7.1 million. You might think that all of these factors would make Simms eager for the offseason training and conditioning activities to start and motivate him to put his best foot forward to show the team that he is back to 100% health and can be the quarterback that he had always claimed he had the potential to be.

If you haven't seen the Chris Simms article in today's paper, you'll want to check it out.

Basically, the long and short of it is that Simms is opting out of voluntary offseason workouts because he doesn't know what his status is with the Bucs.

NFL Notes: Utecht Adds Balance To Bengals Attack

Published: March 27th, 2008
By Brian DeLucia's Blog

The Bengals have one of the stronger passing attacks in the league, but most of that production comes from the wide receiver positions.  The club hopes the signing of former Colts’ tight end Ben Utecht adds balance to their attack.

Utecht was primarily a backup behind Dallas Clark with the Colts, but saw a lot of snaps the past couple seasons as the number two guy and was productive as a starter when Clark was out of the lineup.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the Clock Today? ESPN’s Clock..

Published: March 27th, 2008
By Buc 'Em
ESPN and more specifically Sportscenter will put the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the Clock this afternoon (I'm assuming during the 6pm Sportscenter). Mel Kiper and a host of others will dissect the Bucs intentions for Draft Day.

This should be an interesting show to watch. Will they truly have a handle on the Bucs needs? Or will they skim over the teams true needs and propose some crazy draft picks? At any rate, tune in to ESPN's 6pm Sportscenter and maybe, just maybe Mel Kiper and crew will tell us something we don't know. I'll attempt a recap here tonight, but I get home around 6ish sooo I'll try...

NFL proposing measures to curtail tampering, tanking

Published: March 26th, 2008
By Bucs Beat | tampabay.com - St. Petersburg Times and tbt*

The NFL's competition committee has put forward a measure that would create a five- to seven-day moratorium period at the start of free agency during which contract negotiations would be permitted but not signings.

The proposal, one of many that will be discussed during next week's owners' meetings in Palm Beach, is aimed at reducing the amount of improper contact between teams and players and their representatives before the start of the signing period.

Two Former Bucs Don’t Have To Find Day Jobs Yet

Pittsburgh picked up Anthony McFarland today. So, the team that plays a the 3-4 signed a guy who has never played in that system before. Where would he fit in? No one is pushing Casey Hampton off his starting spot at the nose, and if Warren Sapp couldn't make athe transition to 3-4 defensive end, I don't think McFarland will do any better. I guess he'll compete with Chris Hoke to backup Hampton, but Hoke has been with the Steelers for seven years now and knows the system. I don't know the contract details yet, but I'm guessing he signed for no bonus and is really there as a camp body.

A Titans Fans’ Opinion on Ben Troupe

Published: March 26th, 2008
By Atop the Crow's Nest

Andrew over at Total Titans decided to submit his opinion about Ben Troupe, a former Titan, now a Buccaneer. Thank you to Andrew for his article.

Ben Troupe is one of the most athletic tight ends in the NFL. There have been times when he went high in the air to hurdle would-be tacklers. Unfortunately, except for one year, his athleticism hasn’t translated into production on the field.

Positions Thought I’d Never Do Proper: Linebacker

Derrick Brooks: I'm not sure what changed for Brooks between 2006 and 2007, but there was a huge improvement in his play. I'm pretty sure a lot of it had to do with my criticisms of him a couple years ago. Anyway, if he can keep up that level of production, he's going to make it hard to force him into retirement at the end of the season.
