Bucs To Workout Chad Henne

With the draft exactly one month and one day away, the Bucs are taking advantage of working out the draft eligible. One of those working out for the Bucs this week is former University of Michigan quarterback Chad Henne. Although he is just working out, this seems to me like the Bucs might be shopping for a quarterback in the draft. I remain adamant about the fact that the Bucs need another QB, one for future use. Even though the Bucs have 6 quarterbacks on their roster, there is need for one more. Think about it. Two of them are over 35. One is over 30, and basically retired. One is still recovering from having his spleen removed 2 years ago, and may never be the same again. One has very little experience, and one just plain sucks (yes Bruce, I’m talking to you).
I watched Henne for four years at Michigan. He was never a disappointment in my eyes. He never won any major awards, and won only one bowl game, but awards and championships don’t make the athlete. There is something to be said about a QB who takes his team to a bowl game in all four of his years, twice to the Rose Bowl. In his career, Henne completed 828 out of 1,387 passes for 9,715 yards, 87 touchdowns, and 37 picks. All five of those are school records. His 87 touchdown passes is second most in Big Ten history, behind the 90 thrown by Drew Brees of Purdue. Henne has a great arm, and is a great student of the game. His accuracy on short passes is known to have been shaky, and he isn’t very mobile outside the pocket.
The Bucs still need a quarterback in this draft. I think there is a talented field this year, and Henne is one of my favorites. The Bucs won’t get a Matt Ryan, or even a Brian Brohm, but I would be happy with a Chad Henne. Ultimately, I would be happy with just a quarterback (but please Gruden, no more Bruce Gradkowski’s!)
