If Garcia is Done, So Are The Bucs

Jeff Garcia, Tampa’s quarterback, can’t even throw the ball yet.

Garcia suffered a back injury in the first quarter of Sunday’s game against Washington. He returned briefly in the fourth quarter, but was ineffective. I was optimistic about Garcia playing on Sunday, but Garcia doesn’t have the same feelings.

“I’m feeling a little better today; I’m taking some better steps today than yesterday, [but] I’m not at a point now where I can even throw the ball yet.’’
-Jeff Garcia

When asked about playing on Sunday, Garcia said that it’s going to be a “coach’s decision.” Garcia also reported to be feeling better, but doesn’t want to risk the Bucs. He has not practiced all week up to this point. If he can’t play on Sunday, it will either be Bruce Gradkowski or Luke McCown taking the snaps. Chris Simms is still on IR, and Jake Plummer would rather gain 20 pounds laying on the couch than playing ball.

Truthfully, if Garcia is out, so are the Bucs. They will be playing a Saints team that is rather effective against other teams. They have had their down moments, but they have also had big moments. Garcia is the out and out leader of this team, and without their leader, the Bucs are nothing. Even Jon Gruden says that Garcia is their leader. Gradkowski learned nothing from last year, and still can’t play ball very well. Luke McCown should get a shot, just to see what he can do. Remember Tim Rattay? Remember how they almost beat the Bears last year? If Garcia is out, everything rests on the defense. If nothing else, start McCown. Please get better Jeff. Soon.
