9. Alstott Gets a Hand (August 10, 2007)

Even with all the question about his health and age, Buccaneer fan favorite Mike Alstott told everyone he would be back for the 2007 season. He had come off of two strong years that reminded everyone of why he was the “Touchdown Vulture.” Those past two years were a reminder of his skill, following a horrible neck injury in 2004.

Alstott came to training camp in excellent shape, physically and mentally. He was ready to help the Bucs rebound from the year before, and possibly chase another championship.

Early in training camp, Alstott had an examination on his neck, revealing unacceptable stress levels. Unfortunately, that meant that he was quickly heading to injured reserve. Even though he wasn’t contemplating retirement, Buc fans knew that they were robbed of seeing him in action this year. Alstott made an announcement to the media the day before the Bucs were to play the New England Patriots in their preseason opener. His emotions were evident, as he told everyone he wouldn’t be playing, all while tears welled in his eyes.

After the announcement, the emotion from Alstott carried over to the rest of his team, as they beat the Patriots in their preseason opener. Before the game, emotion spilled out of every seat in the stadium, as Alstott ran out with his team during the announcement of the starting lineups. The crowd roared for their beloved fullback, and Alstott struggled to hold back the tears.

“The guy loves football and he loves the Bucs. It’s tough to get over it and it’s tough to say good-bye to guys that have helped you win a championship.”
-Head Coach Jon Gruden
