There are 32 teams in the NFL. This week, only 2 will matter.

And so it goes, for us fans of “lesser known” teams. Ever since the the schedules were announced earlier this year, the Patriots-Colts game was what had everyone buzzing. The game is so much bigger now, seeing as how both teams are undefeated. ESPN will have constant coverage of this game all week long, breaking down the game, analyzing players, and so forth. This quite simply, is the biggest game of the season, even being dubbed “Super Bowl XLI 1/2.”
But for the rest of us, who’s favorite team isn’t an undefeated team from New England or Indy, we try and focus on our teams, and their upcoming games. Perhaps only the Buc fans and the Cardinal fans will care that their teams are playing. Maybe there is a fantasy team owner out there somewhere who is concerned about the performance of a player or two on either team. The “Battle of the Unbeatens” is the only game that is making headlines, overshadowing the other 13 games that are to be played. Everyone will know every word that is said by Tom Brady or Bill Belichick. Will it matter if Jeff Garcia makes a mention of anything to the media this week? No.
Don’t get me wrong. This will be a great game filled with a lot of drama, and it will go down to the final minute. It’s just that this game eliminates all the other games, and all the other great things that could happen. Someone could set a record, break a record, or suffer a life threatening injury. But all the attention will be focused on the Colts-Pats matchup. Is that fair for the other 30 teams that busted their butts just as hard as these two? We all know that Peyton Manning is one of the hardest working players in the NFL, but that shouldn’t take away from everyone else.
Just in case anyone is interested, the Bucs will take on the Arizona Cardinals this Sunday, hoping to end their losing streak. The only way most of us will know about the game is by watching the ticker during the Pats-Colts game. Once this week passes, all the hype will die down, and it will be time to focus on the other teams.
