David Climer of the Tenneasean would like to scratch Jon Gruden's name off the list of potential Phil Fulmer replacements.

Sure, there are examples of coaches who have been able to leap across the great divide. But the vast majority of coaches fall in one of two categories - NFL or college.

And Gruden is an NFL guy.

Actually, I think Gruden would excel as a college coach. Recruiting is really the most important aspect of the college game. Raw talent plays a huge part in their success, and Gruden is a master at the sales pitch. Many players over the years have taken less money to come to Tampa Bay just because they wanted the chance to be coached by Gruden. He is a bottomless well of motivation, he has an outstanding work ethic and he knows his Xs and Os. Money wouldn't be a problem; I'm sure Tennessee can afford to give him whatever the going rate is of a recently-fired NFL coach.

Climer downplays Gruden's wife's Tennessee connection, but she is originally from Sevier county and is rumored to really want to go back. If both coaches are let go at the end of the season, I could definitely see it happening.
