The Gays Love Them Some Joey

Outsports.com, a web site devoted to gays in sports that I just happened to stumble across while surfing for photos of naked cheerleaders (female cheerleaders!), did a small article on how gays like Joey Harrington in Atlanta. Turns out they think he's just swell. Heh... I said "swell".

"I'm excited about the season and yes, I find Harrington attractive. Who wouldn't?" says Gregory Hendricks, a gay Falcons fan in Atlanta. "Even my gay friends who don't like football, they like him. All of my friends who hate sports, once they see him they say, 'Hey, I'll go to a game to see him.' "

Mike Horton, a gay football fan in Atlanta who roots for the New England Patriots, says Harrington may change his perspective and prompt him to give the Falcons a second look: "It's interesting what an extreme opposite Harrington is to our previous quarterback. I like the fact that he's suave and polished, but boy, is he pretty. I think I might try to make a few more games this year."

It goes on and on like that. I think at the end of it they all get together and sang Bette Midler songs while comparing pecs.

The real reason I came across this was because a real, actual newspaper published it. But not an Atlanta newspaper. It was the Detroit Free Press, the newspaper for the city Harrington left over two years ago. And their article is just an uncredited and abbreviated version of the Outsports.com piece. Which means there was no real reason for them to run the piece except to embarrass Harrington. Man, those guys in Detroit sure know how to hold a grudge.

And, yes, I am saying that it is embarrassing to a straight professional football player to be openly admired by homosexual men. Oooh, big surprise, gays... you're not readily accepted in a football locker room in 2007. At least consider the progress you've made, though. Brady Quinn is allowed to shower with the rest of the team. That must count for something.

Ok, I've opened my mouth and closed my eyes. Now what's my big surprise?
