Got 2 Try A New Position: Defensive Line

Gaines Adams (DE): Adams is a guy with a lot of potential that has flashed in camp from time to time. He was given every opportunity to win the starting right end job, especially after Simeon Rice was told to get lost, but just couldn't do it. I really, really want Adams to do well. I just... I just don't think he's going to live up to his draft slot.

Darrell Campbell (DT): Campbell started off slow in camp but has steadily improved to become a serious contender for the backup under tackle. Arron Sears continues to get the best of him in their matchups, but he has been tough against the run.

Kevin Carter (DE): He should be allowed to wear a big "S" on his jersey. Carter is strong and smart and what he has lost in speed he has more than made up for in anticipation. He can play any spot on the line, but will most likely split time between left end and under tackle.

Patrick Chukwurah (DE/LB): Even though he is listed as a part-time linebacker, he really hasn't lined up in that position. Chukwurah has amazing speed off the line and good technique. He has had a great camp and has excelled at the right end spot where the best athlete usually lines up. He is also a special teams monster. I really haven't found a flaw in his game yet.

Jovan Haye (DT): Haye has the inside track as the starting under tackle. He led all Bucs with four tackles in the New England game and has been all over the run in camp. He isn't exactly the dominating force I was looking for when last season ended, but he is improving.

Chris Hovan (DT): Hovan is a rock. He has been a leader on the team this offseason and backed it up in practice. He consistently gets pressure up the middle and is disruptive in the pocket. No one even came close to challenging him for playing time at nose.

Julian Jenkins (DE/DT): Jenkins has been quiet but good this offseason. He looks bigger and stronger than he did last year and has gotten into the backfield quite a bit in practice.

Tim Jones (DT): A camp body that I don't know anything about except that he won't be on the roster this time next month.

Greg Peterson (DT): Peterson has improved, but not very quickly. He has all the physical tools to be good, but just isn't performing well enough to make a push for playing time. Add the fact that Maurice Stovall, of all people, ran over him on punt protection and he may not have a spot.

Jeremy Pittman (DE): Another tryout player that made the camp roster but won't go any further. He has actually shown some moves here and there but just isn't getting the time needed to make any kind of impression.

Ryan Sims (DT): Sims came to Tampa as an underachieving defensive tackle and hasn't done a lot to improve on that reputation. He missed a few practices with an injury and when he came back didn't have any kind of spark to his game. I was rooting for him because he would have been a good value for a first round pick, but I don't see much future here.

Greg Spires (DE): Spires has had a great camp. He actually looks better now than he did during the season last year, perhaps the result of the team drafting Adams to take over at his end. Spires is in no danger of losing out to Adams, but may have to share time with Carter. Jon Gruden has made it a point to start Carter at the left end spot and seems willing to give him the opportunity to keep it.

Greg White (DE): White just joined the team two weeks ago, but Gruden has talked him up quite a bit. He has been on and off practice squads around the NFL and finally saw some success in the Arena League where he won Rookie of the Year in 2006. He has performed well since he's been on the team... there may just not be room for him.

Ellis Wyms (DT/DE): Another guy who can play either position. Wyms had the only Buccaneer sack of the New England game, led the team in sacks in 2006 and just keeps hanging on. Haye is really making a push for his starting under tackle spot, but Wyms is still a valuable player.

Making the team: Carter (starter), Hovan (starter), Haye (starter), Chukwurah (starter), Adams, Wyms, Jenkins, Campbell
