Friday Training Camp Summary

Jeff Garcia is by far the sharpest quarterback on the field. He missed some throws, but no more than you woudl expect. Bruce Gradkowski is still having trouble with the deep ball and Chris Simms can't seem to get his balls to the flat or intermediate receivers. Maybe there's a way to combine them into one competent backup, a la The Fly. Judging by the number of reps, Gradkowski appears to have the lead on the backup job.
The competition at slot receiver between Maurice Stovall and Michael Clayton is going to be tough. They both looked very good. Clayton may not be in as much trouble as I originally thought. David Boston will make the team this year if he continues to play like he did today.
Welcome to the Rocket Backfield 2007. The formation is making is making a comeback.
Right now the starting offensive line looks to be Luke Petitgout, Anthony Davis, John Wade, Davin Joseph and Jeremy Trueblood. Dan Buenning was taking third string reps at center in the morning but starting reps in the afternoon. He didn't look good and had a few botched snaps. Joseph led warm-ups in both practices. He may be a team captain this season.
Everyone in the world took reps at starting under tackle including Ellis Wyms, Kevin Carter, Greg Peterson and Jovan Haye. Haye seemed to get the most work there.
Patrick Chukwurah was starting at right defensive end where Simeon Rice should have been. Gaines Adams also took some reps there, but Chukwurah looks really impressive. With Rice gone, this is going to be one of the competitions to really keep an eye on.
Ryan Nece lined up at middle linebacker. This apparently means Cato June is so far ahead of him on the strongside that the team isn't going to bother holding a competition there. Quincy Black took some snaps at second string strongside. Say that ten times real fast -- "second string strongside". It's hard.
Alan Zemaitis is doing nothing impress and may not make the team this year. Brian Kelly looked great and made several plays.
Derrick Brooks injured his hamstring toward the end of practice. He will be day-to-day.
Luke Petitgout was held out of practice in the afternoon. Someone please tell me this isn't his back problems flaring up again.
