Wednesday’s Minicamp Review

Chris Simms did not take a single team rep yesterday. Instead he spent most of the day doing individual footwork drills and taking "mental reps" along with Zac Taylor. After listening to an interview with Jon Gruden from this practice, it's pretty obvious that Simms has sunk below Luke McCown on the depth chart in his head. If that's the way it comes out on paper when training camp starts in July, there's not much of a chance Simms will rise above it. It's entirely possible that last year's starting quarterback could be a camp cut. And if Jake Plummer ever shows up, it's almost guaranteed.

Maurice Stovall looked unbelievable catching everything.

The defense practiced almost exclusively in the 4-3 yesterday.

Tanard Jackson practiced at both cornerback and safety. Brian Kelly is nursing a knee bruise and didn't practice. Neither did Kevin Carter. I haven't been able to find anything on why Carter was held out.

Gaines Adams looks very fast. Without pads, it's hard to judge the linemen, but Adams gets around the corner quick.

There were a lot of players fielding kickoffs. David Boston, Cadillac Williams, Mark Jones, Chad Owens, Michael Clayton and Earnest Graham all took some kickoffs. I get the feeling that Clayton is doing everything possible to get in the coaches' good graces because Stovall is clearly out performing him as a receiver. Special teams may be a spot where he can make a good impression.

There was only one two-hour practice yesterday, so not a lot happened. The team went bowling after practice, as is Gruden's tradition. Cadillac Williams rolled a 214. Bruce Gradkowski rolled a 15 because his balls kept veering into the gutter after they got past the 30 foot mark. (Come on, Bruce. I kid because I love.)

You think this is impressive? Pittman threw a few balls down the alley overhand.
