Thursday’s OTA Review

Finally got some word back on the final day of OTAs on Thursday (just in time for minicamp tomorrow.) It's a little late, but there's some good stuff. Here's what I picked up:
Jamie Winborn filled in for Derrick Brooks. Winborn also looked good from what I hear, and it's a shame that he may be relegated to more backup duty with the abundance of linebackers on the team. Cato June is definitely starting strongside and Barrett Ruud has the middle pretty well locked up. So it looks like the backups will be Winborn, Quincy Black at MLB and Ryan Nece at SLB. Who will be the fourth linebacker in 3-4 alignments? Probably Winborn. I'm glad he stayed in Tampa this year, but he may regret it from a career standpoint because I'm guessing he doesn't play a lot of defensive snaps.
Alan Zemaitis's job may be on life support. Sammy Davis currently has the inside track for that fourth CB spot.
Chris Simms did not look sharp. A couple good throws, but mostly was (wait for it....) slow. It appears that Jeff Garcia is really the best quarterback on the roster right now. This makes me sad all over.
Luke Petitgout was the starting left tackle, Anthony Davis started at left guard and John Wade was still at center. Those were pretty much expected. Petitgout is miles better than Davis at tackle and Arron Sears is still a rookie. That left guard position is going to be interesting. I think Sears has more physical talent than Davis, but Davis has been in the program for a couple years. If Dan Buenning can't beat out Wade for starting center in training camp, he may be relegated to the flex backup role this year. That's a pretty plum job, though. You're valued for your versatility and the fact that you're a backup means less wear on your body. A guy who can play either guard or center who has been mostly a backup and stick around in the league for 10+ years and leave the game with good knees. And that's more important than ever with all the pension talk these days.
David Boston filled in for Joey Galloway and didn't miss a beat. He looks great and is still very fast.
That's pretty much it. Hopefully some good reports will come out of minicamp.
