Chris Simms Is Falling (On The Depth Chart) And He Can’t Get (His Arm) Up (Very Quickly)

Some idiot said this yesterday:

I'm betting [Jon Gruden] doesn't trust Grads as the #2 for a good, long while.

That idiot was me. According to Fox, Chris Simms is now third on the depth chart behind Jeff Garcia and Bruce Gradkowski. The bad news for him is with seven quarterbacks on the roster, he can still fall farther.

Speaking of Simms, Pewter Report is getting a lot of good publicity for their no bullshit interview with him a couple days ago. In it, Simms addresses why he thinks Garcia passed him as the starter.

"I think I probably developed some bad habits at first because I was trying to protect my stomach when I was throwing. Right now I'm really more or less trying to get rid of those bad habits so I can get back into my good ones."

I think it's nice that he's taking the responsibility for dropping on the depth chart and not passing it off to the coach. But when Pewter Report asks him about the thousand or so batted balls over the last couple years, he's not so quick to accept blame.

"I think it's more or less three-step drops. When you look back at the batted balls more often than not they're happening on three-step drops."

Taking a three-step drop is a coaching decision, Chris. You're blaming Jon Gruden for your batted balls. Stop it! Several other teams in the league run an offense very similar to the Buccaneers' and they don't have nearly the problem you do with this. You, sir, have a slow delivery. Period. You can see it on tape. One time I clocked your wind-up on an egg timer just to see if I could. I'm guessing it's a skill you can improve over time just like anything else... fast twitch muscles and whatnot. But as it stands, you have the height and you have the arm strength, but not the delivery speed. And if you don't realize that, you won't improve it. And if you don't improve it, you won't succeed in Gruden's offense.

This is actually a time-lapse photo taken over ten seconds. Notice there is no blur.
