Tampa Bay Takes A Leak

The Buccaneers signed C.J. Leak yesterday, the brother of the player the team should have taken in the seventh round last month, Chris Leak. C.J. signed as a tight end, but he is really a player without a position. He is a former University of Tennessee player, so I have had the opportunity to watch Leak for a while. He started off at Wake Forest as a quarterback but was injured early in his sophomore year and sat out nearly two years as a result. Then he came to Tennessee in 2002 and played very little for the next two years, but somehow the starting job was his to lose in 2004. And lose it he did, to Eric Ainge. They started shuffling him around in various positions, including safety and linebacker. He finally landed on tight end, went undrafted, spent some time with Buffalo last year, and here he is.

For this, the Buccaneers had to release cornerback Kenny Scott. As I said last night, this indicates that Bruce Allen probably has the whole Brian Kelly thing under control. But my new question is, why Scott? It seems like Chaz Williams, a tryout player who isn't nearly as athletic as Scott, would have been the odd man out. What did Scott do at minicamp to get cut in favor of a quasi-tight end with no future? Or, more positively, what did Williams do in minicamp to set himself apart? Dimeback will be an interesting competition this season.

(I don't want to totally shit on Leak here. He came to Wake as one of the most highly recruited quarterbacks in the league that year and his athletic ability is excellent. I'm mainly questioning why the Bucs would use a roster spot on him when tight end is probably the position least in need of any more depth. But just so there's no hard feelings, here's Leak back in the day.)

C.J. Leak throws a pass in Vols practice about three years and four positions ago.
