Culpepper’s Future Shaky In Miami

Daunte Culpepper is working hard to rebound from knee problems over the past couple years, but will miss the Dolphins’ pre-draft minicamp.  Culpepper’s future looks anything but certain in Miami.

Culpepper isn’t new head coach Cam Cameron’s man.  Cameron is not sold on Culpepper, but this goes beyond the injury factor.  Culpepper is more of a downfield passer who lacks ideal touch and timing within the intermediate passing game.  He tends to hold onto the ball longer than most quarterbacks to utilize his strong arm and legs to make things happen once a plays breaks down.

Cameron’s offense relies heavily on timing and touch.  His quarterbacks must be accurate and have a natural feel for the short and intermediate passing game.

Cameron is a major reason the Dolphins are interested in trading for Kansas City’s Trent Green.  Green and Cameron worked together while both were in Washington.  Green understands Cameron’s system naturally with his timing and touch ability.

The biggest question with Green is age and durability.  Green struggled with injuries last season and struggled behind a declining offensive line in Kansas City last season.

Even if the Dolphins secure Green before the draft, the Dolphins could still position themselves for a quarterback in the first round.  They are evaluating both JaMarcus Russell and Brady Quinn heavily in the weeks leading up to the draft.

Dolphins’ GM Randy Mueller loves Russell’s upside and physical tools, but like Culpepper, wouldn’t be a very good fit in Cameron’s offense.  Quinn compares very favorably to Trent Green in terms of potential if he can become more of an accurate passer.  Quinn does have the natural ability to excel in a timing and touch offense, but his problems with accuracy do scare a lot of scouts.
