When to draft a quarterback

Published: February 25th, 2007
By NFL_Czar's Blog

When is the right time to draft a quarterback in the first round?

The correct answer is when you have a first-year head coach. For example, the Raiders should have taken a quarterback, say Matt Leinart, last year because it was Art Shell’s first season. They didn’t and Shell had no excuse to fall back on before being fired. And it’s definitely why they will take a quarterback this year, having hired Lane Kiffin, an offensive head coach. The two men can grow together. Most believe that Kiffin will tell owner Al Davis that of the draft’s top two quarterbacks, he prefers JaMarcus Russell to Brady Quinn.

Russell is a big topic at Combine

Published: February 24th, 2007
By NFL_Czar's Blog

Could the first draft pick in April really look like some oversized Eddie Murphy character? Yes, that’s a shot at chubby LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell, who definitely didn’t arrive at the NFL Combine as a lean machine. Russell may have even tipped the scales at 280 pounds in the biggest game of his life, throwing for a career-best 322 yards in the Sugar Bowl win over Notre Dame.

Bucs Lose Coin Flip - Hardy To Coach

Published: February 23rd, 2007
By Buccaneer Harbour
Well, the Bucs lost the coin flip to the Browns, and they now pick 4th overall. The bright side is they still may get who they want, and they will pick ahead of Cleveland in the 2nd round. Beyond that, it sucks. But we'll see what positions they address in the FA market and that should give a good gauge as to where they need to go in the draft.

The rest of the league is more interesting

With so little going on in Buccaneers world that they have to resort to posting the five best moments from the 2006 season on their web site. And, really, with so many memorable and winning plays last year, it was a wonder they got through this article at all. But, really, the Bucs sucked last year and this was just a way for the team to look busy while they're getting ready for the combine where they can track players' 40 times down to the hundredth of a second because we all know it matters SO much. "You ran a 4.40? Pffft, I ran a 4.37, bitch. Now lick my sneakers clean!"

What’s Happening?

Published: February 18th, 2007
By Buccaneer Harbour
Well, I haven't really gotten going yet on blogging about the upcoming FA period primarily because news has been pretty much absent. Well, some of the Bucs' best hopes for improving key areas of the team have been dashed as some key FA targets were franchised. LB Lance Briggs, who was primary target number one for the Bucs to bring in as Brooks' heir apparent, was franchised by Chicago the other day. Also franchised were CB Asante Samuel (NE), and DE Justin Smith. Both were considered targets by the Bucs to improve the two other defensive areas.

Balls remain unwashed

So, another year, another time I get to post Ski's concession to me for his loss on our Super Bowl wager. And another year he does so with blatant disregard for the spirit of the bet. Ski, author of the highly read and always compelling BestB Bucs Blog template and the only slightly more frequently updated Best Bucs Blog has a bright future in politics ahead of him. That way he could blend right in with all the other white guys who promise the moon but then deliver green cheese.

The NFC South just got a lot more entertaining

Michael Vick to call his own plays.

Possible writing angles:
1) Vick will only call quarterback draws and run-options to the halfback.
2) Compare Peyton Manning's and Michael Vick's brains.
3) Compare Terry Bradshaw's and Michael Vick's brains.
4) Vick is too high to remember the play when he calls it in the huddle.
5) Fieldturf is not a good surface in which to draw plays. (not enough making fun of Vick's brain.)
6) Vick on cell phone to ex-coach Jim Mora in the huddle (has added benefit of making fun of Mora at the same time.)
7) Vick 's terminology is all drug references.
8) Soliloquy of a scared and nervous Vick in the huddle in week 1 calling his first play. Also has munchies.

Hear that sound? That's the sound of Aaron Rodgers banging his head against his locker while sobbing uncontrollably.

But really, ten million dollars versus riding a tractor -- in Mississippi. Not a hard choice.
